The 1947 Nobel Prize for literature indelibly marked the literary history and culture of the 20th century not only for his fictional writings but also for his intense work as a critic and commentator of the history and society of his time. This is why the writer André Rouveyre defined him "le contemporain capital" of his generation. These eight texts illustrate the thought on Europe he developed in the mid 1900s and then reached its maturity between the two World Wars. Gide considers Europe as an ensemble of different voices which must not forsake their individuality but, on the contrary, exalt it harmoniously in the "European concert." While bound to their historical context, these considerations still speak to our present allowing us to question it as well. «Cosa sarà l'Europa di domani?»; questa è la domanda che attraversa i testi di André Gide (1869-1951) raccolti nel presente volume. Premio Nobel per la letteratura nel 1947, Gide ha segnato indelebilmente la storia letteraria e la cultura del Novecento, portando avanti, accanto all'attività di narratore, un intenso impegno di critico e commentatore della storia e della società del suo tempo, tanto che lo scrittore André Rouveyre lo definisce il «contemporaneo capitale» della sua generazione. Gli otto testi qui tradotti intendono illustrare la riflessione di Gide sull'Europa, che si sviluppa dall'inizio alla metà del Novecento e che raggiunge i suoi esiti più maturi tra le due guerre. Gide pensa l'Europa come un insieme di voci diverse che non devono rinunciare alla propria individualità ma, al contrario, esaltarla nell'armonia di un «concerto europeo». Per quanto legate al contesto storico, le sue considerazioni non hanno perso la loro attualità e la loro efficacia, e permettono ancora di interrogare il nostro presente.
